CD - Besprechung von »Michael Peters

Eines meiner Lieblingsinstrumente in der Salsa sind die Vibes (spanisch Marimba). Da gab es ja hervorragende Musiker wie z.B. Tito Puente oder Cal Tjader, denen wir eine Reihe von sehr schönen Mambos mit den Vibes verdanken. Aber es muss nicht immer Mambo sein und es muss auch nicht immer aus den 60ern oder 70ern stammen. Dass auch Salsa durch Vibes veredelt werden kann, bewiesen nicht zuletzt z.B. »Son Boricua. Die lieferten tolle CDs ab - allerdings mit dem kleinen Makel behaftet, dass es sich ausschliesslich um Cover-Versionen alter Hits handelte.

Grupo Latin Vibe - eine Band aus New York - zeigt sich da deutlich innovativer. Mit Amanecer legen die 6 Männer und eine Frau um die beiden Bandgründer Tommy Mattioli (Vibes) und Anibal 'Tito' Rivera (Conguero und Sänger) ihre mittlerweise schon 3. CD vor ( nach Mambo City aus dem Jahr 2003 und All That Vibe aus dem Jahr 2005 ), die diesmal ausschliesslich aus Eigenkompositionen besteht. Spätestens nach All That Vibe sind die New Yorker vom Geheimtipp aufgestiegen zu Favouriten vieler DJs und Tänzer. Und das aus eigener Kraft - kein Plattenlabel unterstützt diese grossartige Band.

Musik für Tänzer - das ist Programm! Schliesslich handelt es sich bei Grupo Latin Vibe nicht um ein Studioprojekt ( wie die oben erwähnten Son Boricua ), sondern die Jungs stehen 'hart' an der Front und das hört man der CD auch an. New York Besucher sollten sich Zeit nehmen für den Besuch der Park Side Lounge. Hier spielen sie seit Jahren jeden Freitag abend live ( WEB-Seite »-->hier ). Auf der immer sehr aktuellen WEB-Seite der Band findet man viele weitere Gigs im Raum New York ( »-->hier ). So kommen locker schon mal 3-4 Auftritte pro Woche zustande, was wiederum für gute Qualität im Studio bürgt.

Latin Vibe - der Name ist Programm. Die Vibes gespielt von Tommy Mattioli sind das bestimmende Instrument im sehr entspannten Sound der Band. Der aber auch schon mal richtig treiben kann. Und das tut er gleich beim ersten englisch gesungenem Mambo Lady Mambo. Bemerkenswert das Conga-Solo unterlegt von einem groovenden Piano. Und augenzwinkernd wird vom Chorus der Mambo Babarabatiri zitiert. Das alles in einem sehr anspruchsvollem Tempo.

Ja ja der ganze Mambo-On2-Hype ... wird glücklicherweise auf dieser Cd nicht ausgeschlachtet. Uns werden auch Rhythmen wie Salsa, Cha Cha Cha und Bolero präsentiert. Die Band selbst spricht von Salsa-Jazz-Sound. Für mich ein stimmiger Ausdruck. Nicht nur die Vibes - auch das Piano von William Paul Rodriguez swingen gelegentlich sehr jazzy. 

Gewisse künstlerisch-kreative Spannung zwischen den beiden Köpfen der Band (die deutlich gut tun!) deuten sich sowohl auf der CD als auch im untenstehenden Interview an. Während Tito Rivera eher von der Salsa spricht, zitiert Tommy den grossen Tito Puente: "Salsa ist das was Du isst, Mambo ist das, was Du tanzt...". Es fällt auf, dass die eher jazzigen Stücke von Tommy komponiert wurden, während die zur Salsa tendierenden Stücke von Tito stammen.

Das 2. Stück der Cd ist mein persönlicher Top-Hit: Ramona, La Bailadora. Eine Salsa ( natürlich von Tito :-) im Midtempo aber mit mächtig Dampf. Nach einem nettem Piano Solo in der Mitte des Songs kracht es gewaltig - Timbales und Vibes spielen sich gegenseitig den musikalischen Ball zu. Eine ideale Tanznummer.

Richtig jazzig wird es dann beim Instrumental und Titelsong Amanecer. Cooles Piano Solo an dessen Ende die Clave das Stück doch noch in eine treibende Salsa verwandelt. 

Olvidalo ist für meine Begriffe schon etwas zu schnell. Der instrumentale Tommy's Gujira lässt sich hervorragend als Cha Cha Cha einsetzen. Me Voy Pa' La Rumba - ebenso schnell wie Olvidalo zeigt aber deutlich mehr Charakter. Das beginnt schon mit dem Piano-Intro. Das Bongo-Solo in der Mitte des Songs wird toll von Giancarlo Anderson in Szene gesetzt.

Es gibt sehr viele Instrumentals auf der CD - das Coolste für mich ist Hindsight. Wenn Piano und Clave im hinteren Drittel das Conga Solo einläuten, dann ist das schon so richtig Klasse! Die Conga baut dann eine gewaltige musikalische Spannung auf, die von den Vibes sehr virtuos wieder entladen wird. Toll!

So und nun kommen wir zu den vom Tempo eher gemächlichen Songs. Hier spielt die Band ihre grosse Stärke aus: Lässigkeit. Erinnert sei an La Llave - den Überhit von ihrer ersten CD. Por Tu Amor und für mich noch besser Esto Es Amor gehen so richtig unter die Haut. Salsa Romantica muss nicht schlecht sein ...

Der Vibe-Sound der 60er ist dank Grupo Latin Vibe im 21. Jahrhundert angekommen! Modern gespielt, modern arrangiert, kein bisschen angestaubt und mit starkem Rhythmus.

Fazit: Suuuper CD - kaufen und geniessen! Und wenn Ihr die Gelegenheit habt: Die Band unbedingt live ansehen!

Ich hatte Gelegenheit zu einem kleinem Interview mit den Bandleadern Tommy und Tito - ( Die Abkürzung GLV im Interview bedeutet Grupo Latin Vibe ):

Michael: How came the idea to found a band like this in the tradition of names like Cal Tjader?

Beide: The musical souls/minds of Tito Rivera and Tommy Matiolli became one when they discovered that the truly were impressed with each others style and a respect grew for one another's talent. To that end they went on to create the unique style.

Tommy ergänzt: I'm addicted to playing the vibes and latin jazz is my favorite style to play. Cal Tjader and Tito Puente are the strongest influences for me in this vein.

Michael: I heard often from Salsa-bands that in these days it's very difficult to find a record label. Was it difficult for you to produce the 3 CDs.

Tito: Believe me it is quite difficult to obtain any label in this business. I truly believe it would have to have a financial guarantee from any career musical band to offer the recording corporations. The money that is put into GLV production is from savings and when the CDs are sold it is "recycled" into the next project. Allow me to say, that along the way, the fans who have become our strength have contributed their talents, from graphic artists and photographers. Tito and Tommy have developed a great trust in one another. The artistic freedom is not compromised at any price.

Tommy: We never searched for a label because we like to have artistic control of our music and with the internet a label doesn't seem as important.

Michael: On the one site your music sounds very jazzy - on the other side it's very danceable. That's a great art. You guys like dancing? When you write a song do you think about the dancers?

Tito: Every single note and beat is for the dancer/salero(a)s. The salsero enjoys sauve steps. At the same time it is our vision for those who enjoy the swing of our jazzy sound that a person could enjoy listening all the rhythms, even if they are listening while driving to their destination. Groovy isn't it. Yes, we are dancers. Many of our gigs our socials. It is important that our fans be informed that the members of GLV have been a great contributing factor to the interpretation of the arrangements. Carlito Velazquez (bass), William Paul (piano), Victor Rendon -timbales/percussionist, and Giancarlo Anderson (bongo/percussionist). As GLV would put we have fun playing, therefore there will be dancing.

Tommy: When I think of about a tune for GLV I think of about 3 main things: a melodic hook, a groove, and a tune that's fun to play, usually that makes for a danceable tune.

Michael: What means the term Salsa for you?

Tito: Salsa again is an easier term for all the combinations of the rhythms of mambo, son, guaracha, guaguanco, cha-cha-cha, bomba, plenas. Of course salsa (sauce) is the ingredient used in our cultural dishes to enhance the flavor for a tasty dish. Yes?

Tommy: As Tito Puente used to say "salsa is what you eat, mambo is what you dance. For convenience and marketing I use salsa to describe what is really mambo.

Michael: Eat and dance ... nice! Do you plan to make a tour through Europe?

Tito: A tour through Europe would be a dream come true. It has been difficult to organize. Everyone has requested our presence to perform. Wow this would be just so awesome. Financially it seems to be a problem. I'm sure soon that this dream will come true. It is the vision of all the musicians in GLV.

Tommy: I would dream to play all over Europe and the world, all we need is the money to get us there.

Beide: Well Michael, to that end GLV would like to thank you for your graciousness with your approach to reach us and beginning what could possibly be a dream come true. To this we thank you. Many blessings and regards to our European family. Keep the greatest music in the world alive. Without the DJs it couldn't be possible.

Michael: Thank you for the answers!
